Marriage License Requirements for Troy Residents

Getting a marriage license in Oakland County follows the same rules as the rest of Michigan. Both applicants must appear in person at a clerk's office together. Michigan law under MCL 551.101 requires this. Troy residents can use the local branch at 1151 Crooks Rd or the main Pontiac office. Either location works. The Troy branch requires an appointment.

Both applicants must bring the following:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID
  • Proof of birth date, such as a birth certificate or passport
  • Social Security number
  • Final divorce decree if either person was previously married
  • Death certificate if a prior spouse has passed away

The fee for an Oakland County marriage license is $20 for Michigan residents. After you apply, you must wait 3 days before the license is issued under MCL 551.103. Once issued, the license is valid for 33 days. Applicants aged 16 or 17 need written parental consent. Anyone under 16 cannot get a marriage license in Michigan.

Oakland County also allows online pre-applications. You can start the process online and then complete it at either the Troy branch or the Pontiac main office. This can save time at the counter. Both people still need to appear in person to sign the application and have it finalized.

Online Tools for Troy Marriage Records

Oakland County has more online tools for marriage records than many Michigan counties. Troy residents benefit from this. The genealogy search at courts.oakgov.com, the certified copy purchase portal at apps.oakgov.com, and the Court Explorer at courtexplorer.oakgov.com each serve different purposes. Using all three in combination gives you a thorough way to search for and obtain records without making multiple in-person trips.

For historical records going back before the digital systems, Michiganology.org is the best free resource. The Library of Michigan runs this site and has digitized Oakland County marriage records going back to the 1800s. If you are researching family history or need a record from before 1950, start here before contacting the clerk. The screenshot below shows the Michiganology vital records database.

Getting Certified Copies

For state-level certified copies through MDHHS, you can order via VitalChek. The state charges $34 for the first copy and $16 for each additional copy ordered at the same time.
