Oscoda County Clerk

The Oscoda County Clerk's office at 311 E 5th Street in Mio handles all marriage records for this northern Michigan county. The county is lightly populated and rural. The clerk's office is the only place in the county to get official marriage records. Staff issue licenses, store the vital records archive, and provide certified copies on request.

Oscoda County does not have a county-specific online ordering system. If you cannot visit in person, you have two options: send a written mail request to the clerk's office, or use state-level services for records from 1954 onward. Both paths work, though in-person remains the fastest way to get what you need.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Mio is a small community in the Mio-Au Sable area, and the courthouse is the main government building in town. If you are coming from out of the area, plan your trip to arrive well before 4:00 PM so there is enough time to process your request.

Call (989) 826-1116 before visiting or mailing a request if you want to confirm the record exists and what information you need to provide. The office can tell you what they need and what fees to include in your payment.

Staff will pull the record and make certified copies. Pay before you leave. Cash, check, and possibly card payments may be accepted; call ahead to confirm.

For mail requests, write to the clerk at the Mio address. Include the full names of both parties, the approximate year of marriage, your name and return address, number of copies needed, and payment. Make checks payable to Oscoda County Clerk. A self-addressed stamped envelope speeds up return delivery.

For marriages from 1954 onward, state-level copies are available through MDHHS and can be ordered via VitalChek. For older records, the county clerk in Mio is the only source.

Marriage License Requirements in Oscoda County

Oscoda County follows Michigan's standard rules for marriage licenses. Under MCL 551.103, at least one applicant must appear in person at the clerk's office. Michigan residents apply in the county where one of them lives. If you both live outside Michigan, apply in the county where the marriage will take place.

Michigan requires a 3-day waiting period after you apply. The license is not ready to use until three days have passed. After that, the license is valid for 33 days. If it expires before you use it, you must apply again. You can pay to waive the waiting period if necessary.

Both parties must be 18 or older. Bring photo ID for both people, birth certificates or valid passports, and Social Security numbers. You will also need to provide the full names and birthplaces of both parents and disclose how many times each of you has been married before. No blood test is required in Michigan. The clerk will give you required educational materials about disease prevention at the time of application.

License fees are $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for out-of-state applicants marrying in Oscoda County. The license is valid anywhere in Michigan, not just here. After the ceremony, the officiant returns the signed certificate to the county clerk to create the permanent marriage record.
