Marriage License Requirements in Otsego County

Michigan law requires both parties to get a marriage license before the wedding. Under MCL 551.103, at least one applicant must appear in person when applying. Michigan residents apply in the county where one of them lives. If you live in Otsego County, you apply at the Gaylord office. Out-of-state applicants apply in the county where the marriage will happen.

After you apply, the 3-day waiting period begins. You cannot use the license until three days have passed. The county can waive this wait for a fee if you have a pressing reason. Once the license is issued, it stays valid for 33 days. Getting married after that window means you need a new license. The fee to reapply is the same as the original fee.

Both people must be 18 or older. You need to bring valid photo ID showing your current address, plus birth certificates or passports for both parties. You will also need Social Security numbers, the full names and birthplaces of both parents, and the number of any prior marriages. No blood test is required. The clerk provides required educational materials about sexually transmitted diseases as part of the application process.

Michigan resident couples pay $20 for the license. Non-residents marrying in Otsego County pay $30. The license works anywhere in Michigan.
