Wayne County Online Marriage Application
Wayne County offers an online pre-application system. You can start your marriage license application at home before coming to the office. This is one of the more convenient options available in Michigan. Not all counties offer online pre-filing.
The online application is at evitals.waynecounty.com. Both applicants must complete the online form separately. The form asks for each person's full name, date of birth, city and state of birth, address, county of residence, parent names and birthplaces, and Social Security number. You must get a confirmation number at the end. If you do not get one, the application did not go through and you must come to the office to complete it.
Even after completing the online application, both parties must still come to the office in person. The online form saves time but does not eliminate the in-person requirement. At the office, you will show your ID and documents, confirm your information, and pay the fee.

Marriage License Requirements in Wayne County
Wayne County has some of the more detailed documentation requirements of any Michigan county, in part because it processes such a high volume of applications from people with diverse backgrounds and documentation situations. Review all requirements carefully before your visit.
Both parties must be 18 or older. Ages 16 and 17 may apply with written parental consent. No one under 16 may marry. Wayne County residents must be present when applying. The rule here is clear: if you live in Wayne County, you must apply here. Non-Michigan residents who are both from out of state must apply in the county where the ceremony will be performed, and at least one party must appear in person.
Required ID includes a valid driver's license or state ID showing proof of Wayne County residency. A certified birth certificate with parental information is required for each applicant. Hospital certificates and baptismal papers are not accepted. This is a firm rule at this office, not a suggestion. If you only have one party present at the time of application, that person must show their own ID and birth certificate plus the absent party's birth certificate or passport.
For foreign birth certificates, you need a certified English translation. The translator's signature must be notarized by a separate notary. This is a specific requirement at Wayne County. If you were born abroad, confirm your translation meets this standard before your appointment.
Alternative documentation is accepted if you have no certified birth certificate. Options include a valid U.S. passport signed by the holder, a letter of No Record from the state of birth combined with a NUMIDENT from Social Security, or for foreign-born applicants, a Green Card, Work Authorization Card, or U.S. Naturalization Papers. Canadian citizens may use card-sized birth certificates.
Under MCL 551.103, both parties must disclose prior marriages. No blood testing or HIV counseling is required, but written educational materials about HIV and sexually transmitted diseases are provided at the time of application.
Name Change After Marriage
Wayne County has a specific and important rule about name changes. If you plan to change your name after the wedding, you must sign and print all three license documents using the name you will use after the ceremony. This is not optional. Signing with your current name when you intend to change it can create problems when you later try to use the license as proof of name change.
Take this seriously. Social Security, the Secretary of State, banks, employers, and passport agencies all rely on the marriage license to process a name change. If the name on the license does not match what you intended, you may need to go through a correction process. Plan this before you go to the office, not after.
Name changes are processed through Social Security first, then the Michigan Secretary of State for a driver's license update. The marriage license is the key document for both. You need a certified copy, not the original license, for most name change requests.
Wayne County Marriage License and Record Fees
Wayne County has its own fee schedule, which differs from both the state MDHHS fees and from what other counties charge. Know the fees before you come in so you bring the right payment.
The marriage license application fee for Wayne County residents is $30.00. For non-residents of Wayne County, the fee is $40.00. Payment can be made by cash, money order, or debit/credit card. Personal checks are not accepted at this office.
For certified copies of marriage records, the first certified copy costs $24.00. Each additional copy purchased at the same time costs $7.00. This is lower than the MDHHS statewide fee of $34 for the first copy. An uncertified marriage license search costs $11.50, whether or not the record is found. Personal checks are not accepted for copies either.
For online copy orders through the Wayne County Clerk website, credit card payment is accepted. Additional processing and delivery fees may apply. Online orders are usually faster than mail requests. The standard mail request goes to: Wayne County Clerk, Marriage Certification Dept., 400 Monroe St, Suite 610, Detroit, MI 48226. Include a cashier's check or money order, a completed application form, and a copy of your photo ID.
Getting Certified Copies in Wayne County
Wayne County offers three ways to get certified copies of marriage records: in person by appointment, by mail, and online through the clerk's website. Each has different timelines and requirements.
In-person requests are available for all years of marriage licenses on file. You must schedule an appointment using the Wayne County Clerk's eScheduler. Walk-ins are not accommodated for certified copies. Bring a valid state ID or driver's license. Payment is by cash, money order, or debit/credit card. Personal checks are not accepted. Copies are usually given during the visit after the clerk verifies the request.
By mail, allow about 10 days after the officiant sends in the completed license before the record is available. Write to the Marriage Certification Department at 400 Monroe St, Suite 610. Fill out the Application for a Certified Copy form, include a duplicate copy of your photo ID, and include a cashier's check or money order made payable to "Wayne County Clerk."

State and Online Resources
Wayne County marriage records are also held by the Michigan MDHHS at the state level. You can order certified copies through VitalChek online. The state fee is $34 for the first certified copy, which is higher than the $24 Wayne County charges directly. If convenience is a priority and you cannot visit Detroit, the VitalChek option is useful.
The MDHHS vital records office also accepts mail requests at the state level. Processing times and fees differ from the county. For the lowest cost, go through the Wayne County Clerk directly. For remote access, the state system works well.
For older records and genealogy research, the Michiganology database at michiganology.org has indexed historical marriage records from Wayne County. Wayne County has one of the largest collections given its long history as a major urban center. Records in the Michiganology index go back to the early 19th century.
