Getting a Marriage License in Muskegon County

To apply for a marriage license in Muskegon County, visit the clerk at 990 Terrace St. Michigan law requires at least one applicant to appear in person. Both people coming together is the standard approach. Michigan residents apply in the county where one of them lives. Non-residents apply in the county where the ceremony will be held.

Both applicants must be 18 or older to marry without additional steps. Those who are 16 or 17 may apply with written parental or guardian consent. No one younger than 16 may marry in Michigan. No blood test is required. The clerk provides state-required written materials about disease prevention when you apply. Bring valid government-issued photo ID for both parties.

After applying, there is a mandatory 3-day waiting period. The day of application does not count. The license is valid for 33 days after the application date. If you do not use the license within those 33 days, it expires and you must reapply. After the ceremony, the officiant must return the completed license to the Muskegon County Clerk under MCL Chapter 551. That filed document is the official marriage record for Muskegon County.
